Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) have revolutionized our ability to connect the human brain with external devices. While much attention has been on decoding cortical signals, i.e., ‘read-out’, recent trends highlight the significance of neurostimulation—a critical ‘write-in’ component in BMIs. Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk, exemplifies the future of BMIs. Their implantable BMI, “the Link,” combines recording and stimulation capabilities. Neuralink’s vision extends beyond medical applications, aiming to enhance human cognition and communication.
In this lecture, I will introduce the recent research conducted at KIST on the development and application of bi-directional (i.e., output and input) ‘non-invasive’ BMI based on electroencephalography (EEG) and focused ultrasound (FUS). Specifically, I will discuss the research related to the control of lower limb exoskeleton robots through EEG-based motor intention recognition for people with spinal cord injury and stroke. In addition, I will discuss the research on the application of low-intensity FUS-based non-invasive high-resolution brain stimulation technology to treat various neurological disorders (e.g., stroke, epilepsy).
