The Additive Manufacturing(AM) process developed for creating prototypes has evolved into a production process for manufacturing products. However, there are limitations in terms of the achievable size, production speed, and available materials, which restrict its direct application to products with varied functionalities and shapes. To overcome these limitations, various research efforts are focused on advancing AM process.
These technologies aim to concurrently fabricate materials with vastly different mechanical and electrical properties into products in a single process. In this research a multi-material AM technique capable of simultaneously fabricate materials with distinct electrical properties—insulating, conducting, and pressure-sensitive materials is proposed.
For the insulating component, PLA, ABS, TPU, and PDMS were used. As for the conducting materials, a liquid material containing silver particles was used. To induce the piezoresistance effect, a material based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes was synthesized. In order to simultaneously fabricate these various materials, a material extrusion process with multiple extrusion heads was developed. This enabled the successful creation of three-dimensional circuit devices and various sensors.
