Recently, the transition to a carbon-neutral society is accelerating around the world. It is necessary to apply clean technology such as electric vehicles, batteries, energy storage systems, hydrogen energy, and CCUS to change the fossil fuel-based industrial infrastructure to be carbon-neutral. Electrochemical CO2 recycling technology has received much attention due to its ability to convert CO2 to carbon-neutral chemicals via integration with renewable energy. Many studies have been reported over the last decade, but there are still several challenges such as improvement of energy efficiency, product selectivity, current density, and process stability that need to be addressed for the commercialization of the technologies. Here, the recent progress and perspectives in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction technologies including the reaction system and the electrocatalysts are reviewed to produce valuable chemicals.
